45nm Race

Race Is On for 45nm

IBM, Chartered, Infineon and Samsung have developed the first commercially available design kits for low-power 45-nanometer chips, signaling that after much speculation the race has finally begun toward the next process node.

What that means in real market advantage versus technology bragging rights remains to be seen. New processes are extremely costly, even with design kits, and recouping non-recurring engineering expenses requires a larger number of chips to be sold at each new process node. Still, getting to market first with low-power chips at 45nm could offer significant cost savings to early adopters in highly competitive commercial markets such as cell phones and memory chips.

Wii VS PS3

I Don’t Get This

In answer to the question comparing Wii and PS3 price differential, Hirai says: “You also have to realize that we have a very strong, market-leading console called the PlayStation 2, which is at a very affordable price right now. Consumers will also understand that if you buy a PlayStation 2 right now, and you make some software investments, when you feel it’s right to move onto PlayStation 3, those software titles aren’t going to go by the wayside.”
Okay, so the consumer who can’t afford the PS3 is going to look at prices of the consoles and say to himself, “Sure, the Wii is cheaper, but if I buy this last generation Sony console I can upgrade to a PS3 when I have the money!”
Hmmm. That doesn’t sound like a particularly sound business strategy.

Tulsa rolls in

Seeking to make up lost ground in servers, Intel Corp. has unveiled eight new microprocessors, based on 65-nm process technology.

Previously codenamed “Tulsa,” the Dual-Core Intel Xeon processor 7100 series for servers offers up to twice the performance over previous Intel Xeon MP processors. The dual-core processor family also includes lower-power, 95 watt options that reduce associated energy costs, according to Intel (Santa Clara, Calif.).

“Today’s introduction continues an historic ’summer of servers’ for Intel where we have now delivered a record 23 new processors in three market segments in less than 100 days,” said Tom Kilroy, vice president and general manager of Intel’s Digital Enterprise Group, in a statement. (more…)

Nintendo gives European Wii price

The Wii console from Japanese gaming giant Nintendo will cost under 250 euros (£170) in Europe, according to a senior executive at the company.

The figure is the first time the games giant has given a European price. Bernd Fakesch, head of German operations at the company, mentioned the figure in an interview at the Leipzig Game Convention in Germany. In May, the company said the console would cost 25,000 yen or lower in Japan and $250 (£133) or less in the US.

Intel Core Duo

So what’s the big deal with these latest Intel Core 2 Duo processors, anyway? Well, the Merom chips introduced today take the higher power and efficiency of the desktop Core 2 Duo processors introduced a few weeks back and apply that to laptops. Intel claimed the Merom Core 2 Duo processors would show a 20% performance boost over their predecessors, the Core Duo processors used in notebooks.
