Microsoft Goes Open Source

Microsoft is expected to show a new friendliness to the open-source community by unveiling plans to release the source code to a part of its Silverlight technology at MIX 07 next week, according to sources familiar with the company’s plans.

Sources said Microsoft will also release a beta of Silverlight, a recently unveiled browser plug-in that allows Web content providers to offer a rich video and interactive media experience from directly within Web sites. The technology leverages Vista’s new graphics framework, Windows Presentation Foundation (WPF), and Microsoft is promoting it as a direct competitor to Adobe Systems’ Flash tool and delivery mechanism for rich multimedia content on the Web.

RIM To Turn Windows Mobile Devices in ‘Virtual’ Blackberries

RIM is planning a new software application suite that will let users with smartphones to convert their Windows Mobile based devices in to virtual Blackberries. According to RIM the software will be launched this fall and it will include including support for BlackBerry email, phone, calendar, address book, tasks, memos, browser, instant messaging and other applications developed for the BlackBerry platform.

Also devices running the BlackBerry application suite will be able to connect to BlackBerry services via BlackBerry Enterprise Server as well as BlackBerry Internet Service.

Mozilla releases Thunderbird 2 e-mail program

The organization that co-ordinates development of the Firefox web browser on Thursday launched a new version of its free Thunderbird e-mail program that adds a range of mail management features.

“Thunderbird 2 has powerful new features and proven security, delivering an improved e-mail experience to users worldwide,” Scott MacGregor, lead engineer for Thunderbird at the non-profit Mozilla Foundation, said in a written statement.

IIM Ahmedabad defers admissions indefinitely

Indian Institute of Management, Ahmedabad today announced that the release of admission list has been postponed till further order. This follows a directive from the Human Resource Development Minister that the IIM should not release the list as per its decision. The IIM had decided to release the list on April 21. Earlier, the list was to be announced on April 14.

However, the IIM was asked not to release the list. The six IIM in the country on April 12 decided to go ahead with the admissions despite the Central Government order to halt the process. (more…)

Solar bursts threaten GPS devices

The Global Positioning System (GPS), increasingly vital technology for activities including navigating cars and planes, bank financial transfers and more, may be threatened by powerful radio bursts from the sun, a panel of scientists in the US warned today.

The increasingly technologically dependent society is becoming increasingly vulnerable to space weather.

GPS receivers have become widely used in recent years, using satellite signals to navigate planes, ships and automobiles, and in the use of mobile phones, mining, surveying and many commercial applications. (more…)
