Electronic Arts kept everyone on tenterhooks for a few weeks with the teaser trailer, which revealed very little about the new Need for Speed game. Today the publisher has announced the EA Black Box developed racer will be called Need for Speed ProStreet.

The game features an enhanced version of the autosculpt technology seen in recent NFS titles but looks set to take a more professional look at racing than the street racing games of recent times. EA promises detailed car damage aggressive AI and “a revolutionary online mode” without providing further details.

“Need for Speed ProStreet accelerates street racing culture by providing the ultimate stage for the pursuit of street racing supremacy,” said Executive Producer, Larry LaPierre. “This is a game about building the ultimate performance-tuned battle machine, taking it to multi-disciplinary showdowns all over the world and pitting your skills and reputation against the very best street racers.”

Need for Speed ProStreet will be release later this year on Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, Wii, PlayStation 2, DS, PSP, PC and mobile.

What a wacky week for Sony it has been: Ken Kutaragi prepares to retire on June 19, Sony kills a goat for the launch in Athens of God of War II, and now that the PS3 is out the door, Ken Kutaragi says he has the PS4, 5 and even 6 in mind

Exactly what Kutaragi means about the PS4, 5 and 6 ‘merging into the network’ is unclear, especially when he told eetimes.com that: “The design concept of the Cell processor is the network processor. Now it has become possible, so why not enter?”

Now that Kutaragi will soon part ways with Sony, eetimes.com reported that while “he will maintain an amicable relationship”, future projects will “largely be independent of Sony”. Specifically, Kutaragi told eetimes.com that: “Now I’m ready to start working with a much wider world”.

As for the reason why Kutaragi did not speak of the PS3’s successors earlier, aside from the obvious reason we can think of that they needed to get the PS3 out the door first and spoke about the PS3 being a platform for the next 10 years, Kutarai told eetimes.com that: “I could not talk about the next step. We’ve introduced PS3 in Europe, so now I can openly talk about” [future plans].

Precisely what effect this slightly startling news will have on upcoming PS3 sales, if any, is unclear. Chances are they’ll have no effect whatsoever, as any PS3 successor is likely to be at the very least 3 to 5 years away, given the traditional games console life-span of around 5 years, and given the enormous latent power that is meant to be packed within each and every PS3, just waiting for advanced games programming techniques to unleash it onto a high-def gaming hungry hardcore gamer world.

Still, at least Kutaragi has kept up his reputation for saying really interesting things that definitely have kept him in the headlines over the years, and especially so in the PS3 era.

Ken Kutaragi is most definitely a legend in the world of Sony and in the world of console gaming. Clearly we haven’t heard the last from him yet!

The Global Positioning System (GPS), increasingly vital technology for activities including navigating cars and planes, bank financial transfers and more, may be threatened by powerful radio bursts from the sun, a panel of scientists in the US warned today.

The increasingly technologically dependent society is becoming increasingly vulnerable to space weather.

GPS receivers have become widely used in recent years, using satellite signals to navigate planes, ships and automobiles, and in the use of mobile phones, mining, surveying and many commercial applications.

Indeed, banks use the system to synchronise money transfers,so space weather can affect all of us, right down to our wallet. The cause for their concern, Johnson said, was an unexpected solar radio burst on December 6 that affected virtually every GPS receiver on the lighted half of Earth. Some receivers had a reduction in accuracy while others lost the ability to determine position, he said.

Solar activity rises and falls in 11-year cycles with the next peak expected in 2011.

If that increasing level of activity produces more such radio bursts the GPS system could be seriously affected, the researchers said.

There are two possible ways to shield the system, he said, both very expensive. Either alter all GPS antennas to screen out solar signals or replace all the GPS satellites with ones that broadcast a stronger signal.

That is why it is essential to learn more about the sun’s behaviour quickly in an effort to find ways to predict such events, the researchers said.

In addition to the GPS system, the December solar flare affected satellites and induced unexpected currents in the electrical grid, Johnson said.

The effects were more profound than we expected and more widespread than expected.
The burst produced 10 times more radio noise than any burst previously recorded.

The difference between that burst and normal solar radio emissions it was like the difference between the noise level of a normal conversation and the noise level in the front row of a rock concert.

The burst affected but did not shut down the Federal Aviation Administration’s Wide Area Augmentation System, which uses GPS signals to help in navigation.

Most WAAS ground stations maintained contact with enough satellites to continue working, although their accuracy was somewhat affected.

The stations have to maintain contact with at least four satellites to work, but they usually monitor at least 10 to increase their accuracy, she said. Most were able to meet the minimum, she said.

The briefing came at a Space Weather Enterprise Forum convened by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration to discuss the effects of solar activity. Because of its increasing importance, Johnson said, the Weather Service’s Space Environment Centre was converted from a mainly research centre in 2005 to an operational centre reporting on solar activity and its impacts.

On 22 July 2006, the DLR-operated High Resolution Stereo Camera (HRSC) onboard ESA’s Mars Express obtained images of the Cydonia region, site of the famous “Face on Mars.” The HRSC images include some of the most spectacular views of the Red Planet ever seen.

The HRSC obtained image data in orbit 3253 with a ground resolution of approximately 13.7 metres per pixel. The data were acquired at a latitude of approximately 40.75 degrees North and about 350.54 East longitude.

Triggered by a photo of the Cydonia region taken on 25 July 1976 by the American Viking 1 Orbiter, one of the visible remnant massifs has become famous during the last 30 years as the “Face on Mars”. It was first publicly labelled as “resembling a human head” in the NASA press release on 31 July 1976. Even then, NASA scientists interpreted the formation as an optical illusion caused by the illumination angle of the Sun and the surface morphology, with the resulting shadows giving the impression of eyes, nose and mouth.

CAIRNS, Australia Sep 4, 2006 (AP)— Steve Irwin, the hugely popular Australian television personality and conservationist known as the “Crocodile Hunter,” was killed Monday by a stingray while filming off the Great Barrier Reef. He was 44. Irwin was at Batt Reef, off the remote coast of northeastern Queensland state, shooting a segment for a series called “Ocean’s Deadliest” when he swam too close to one of the animals, which have a poisonous bard on their tails, his friend and colleague John Stainton said. “He came on top of the stingray and the stingray’s barb went up and into his chest and put a hole into his heart,” said Stainton, who was on board Irwin’s boat at the time. Crew members aboard the boat, Croc One, called emergency services in the nearest city, Cairns, and administered CPR as they rushed the boat to nearby Low Isle to meet a rescue helicopter. Medical staff pronounced Irwin dead when they arrived a short time later, Stainton said. Irwin was famous for his enthusiasm for wildlife and his catchword “Crikey!” in his television program

“Crocodile Hunter.” First broadcast in Australia in 1992, the program was picked up by the Discovery network, catapulting Irwin to international celebrity. He rode his image into a feature film, 2002’s “The Crocodile Hunters: Collision Course” and developed the wildlife park that his parents opened, Australia Zoo, into a major tourist attraction. “The world has lost a great wildlife icon, a passionate conservationist and one of the proudest dads on the planet,” Stainton told reporters in Cairns. “He died doing what he loved best and left this world in a happy and peaceful state of mind. He would have said, ‘Crocs Rule!’” Prime Minister John Howard, who hand-picked Irwin to attend a gala barbecue to honor President Bush when he visited in 2003, said he was “shocked and distressed at Steve Irwin’s sudden, untimely and freakish death.” “It’s a huge loss to Australia,” Howard told reporters. “He was a wonderful character. He was a passionate environmentalist. He brought joy and entertainment and excitement to millions of people.”
